Board Game to Video Game Trend on Kickstarter
There's no secret that video games being turned into board games has become quite popular over the last couple of years. The trend seems to be flourishing because of the crowd funding site Kickstarter, which has seen a handful of these board games get funded in record time. The most popular examples would be Dark Souls, and This War of Mine.
Dark Souls, an action role playing video game, published by Namco Bandai in 2011, is one of the most beloved video games in recent history. The game received "Game of the Year Award" by Game Revolution in 2011, and after the squeal was launched in 2013, Digital Spy named Dark Souls the best game of its console generation. Dark Souls 3 the video game was released on March 24th 2016 and has been getting awesome reviews.
When Steamfordged Games launched the board game edition on Kickstarter (April 19th 2016) their goal of (~$72,000) was reached within the first three minutes! They raised 5.4 million dollars in 27 days making it the second most funded board game on Kickstarter behind Exploding Kitten.
This War Of Mine, a survival war video game developed by 11 bit studios in November 2014, is still very popular today. The game focuses on the civilian experience rather then front line combat like most war-themed games do. When This War of Mine, board game launched on Kickstarter they reached their goal of $58,000 in two days and have currently raised $352,000 with 11 days remaining. We can only image how much they can raise in the next couple of days.
With the Steamfordged Games announcement of a Bloodborne board game, coming later this year to Kickstarter it is safe to say this trend isn't going away anytime soon.
